In 2017, “Distracted Driving” claimed over 3,000 lives, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is 3,000 deaths that were preventable. Have you ever noticed that when you’re on the phone and watching a film, you can’t give both your full attention? This is due to your brain not being able to focus on more than one thing at a time. Instead, it toggles the tasks. This is where Distracted Driving becomes very dangerous.

Why is Distracted Driving Bad?

It is common sense that doing something while driving reduces your driving capabilities. For example, it may cause the driver to become less observant or to make bad decisions about how to control the vehicle. This lower standard of driving means that a driver is more likely to fail to anticipate hazards. This can cause risky situations resulting in accidents due to the distraction.

If you are using a phone to talk, text, or browse the internet, chances are that you are less able to stay in the appropriate lane. Also, you may not detect any changes around the lanes and respond in time. Drivers talking on the phone are also more likely to exceed the speed limit or not maintain proper speed. When texting, people often drive at lower speeds. Additionally, there is delayed reaction time and inability to maintain appropriate lane positions or assess traffic conditions. This makes texting while driving dangerous.

Three Types of Distracted Driving

  • Visual distraction: This occurs when a driver isn’t looking at the road or their surroundings. Visual distraction occurs when they are looking at their phones, rubbernecking, or merely looking elsewhere. Reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
  • Cognitive distraction: This occurs when a driver is mentally distracted and isn’t focused on what’s ahead. Whether they are talking to a passenger or thinking about a stressful situation, failing to focus on the road can lead to an accident.
  • Manual distraction: This is when a driver fails to keep their hands on the steering wheel. Manual and visual distractions often occur when people text and drive, reach over to pick up an item, or when they eat while driving.

Statistics show that people who drive distracted have a much higher chance of being involved in an accident.
