Window tint is a popular choice for many car owners. Not only does it reduce the amount of UV light that enters the vehicle, but it also adds privacy and style to your ride. But before you tint your windows, make sure you understand the window tint laws in Texas. Let’s take a closer look at what you need to know.

Maximum Allowable Tint Darkness

In Texas, window tint darkness is measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT). VLT indicates the amount of visible light that passes through the window film. For side windows and rear windows, no more than 25% VLT can be applied. However, for the windshield and front side windows, no more than 25% VLT can be applied, with no more than 5% of reflective material allowed on the windshield and front side windows combined.

Additional Restrictions

In addition to these restrictions on darkness levels, there are certain other restrictions as well. For example, any type of sticker may not be placed on or within 6 inches of any motor vehicle’s windshield or side or rear window unless approved by law enforcement. Furthermore, mirrors must always be used when backing up; no rearview mirror covers are allowed in Texas vehicles.

Medical Exemptions

If you have a medical condition that requires additional protection from sunlight or ultraviolet rays (such as lupus), you may apply for a medical exemption from the window tint laws in Texas. The application process will include providing documentation from a licensed physician explaining your medical condition and why additional protection is necessary for your health and safety; applications must also be accompanied by an application fee of $25 per vehicle. Once approved by law enforcement officials, this exemption will allow up to 35% VLT for all windows except those containing sunroofs or moonroofs (where 50% VLT is still required).

Window tint is an excellent way to enhance both the look and feel of your car while providing added protection from UV rays and glare – just make sure you understand the window tint laws in Texas before getting started! Remember that maximum allowable darkness levels vary depending on window location, with higher levels allowed if you qualify for a medical exemption. Following these laws helps ensure that drivers stay safe while on the roads of Texas!
